A New Day

A Special Message From Facts Editor Jeff Waksman

So here we are.  The Democrats control the White House, the US Senate and House of Representatives.  They control the Wisconsin Governor’s Mansion, and both houses of the state legislature.  I’ve heard from a lot of people in Dane County, from voters to party members to party candidates, and to say that the mood is merely glum is an understatement.  But if you’re looking for a pity party, that is not what you’re going to get here.  I’m going to tell you exactly how I feel:

Hopeful.

The media is spinning this as a defeat for small government politics, and that a new New Deal is here.  But is that really what Americans voted for?  Did the US media even pay attention to the campaign?  Did they even watch any of Obama’s commercials?  Because if you were a casual voter, here are the things that you would have learned about Obama’s platform:

•       Massive tax cuts

•       Spending cuts/Balanced budget

•       Big supporter of gun rights

•       Anti-abortion

•       Staying the course with the Petraeus Plan in Iraq

•       Cutting health care costs through free market/lower tax solutions

In other words, he ran as a Republican.  Forget that Obama stood for none of those things.  He is in favor of the biggest tax increase in the history of the planet.  He is planning more than $1 trillion in new government spending.  He consistently voted against gun rights in Illinois, and voted for infanticide.  He still refuses to admit that he was wrong on the Surge in Iraq.  And he is planning on growing government run health care more than any President in history.  Obama knew that he couldn’t run on his real platform and win.  He had to run as a Republican.

So how did we get to the point where the most leftwing mainstream presidential candidate in the history of the United States was able to run as a Republican and get away with it?  Because the Republican Party hasn’t behaved like the Republican Party.  For the last eight years we allowed our party to support massive discretionary government spending increases.  We let government- run health care spending explode.  We ignored entitlement reform.  We let corrupt politicians put an “R” next to their name and sully our brand.  We behaved like Democrats, and Americans punished us for it.

But that’s why I’m hopeful.  Because from this point forward, the Republican Party will rediscover it’s past.  It will rediscover the spirit of Abraham Lincoln, Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan.  It will rediscover the promise of the 1994 Contract With America.

But now that we’re hopeful, we have to forget everything I just said, because unless we work our butts off none of it will happen.  The fact is that none of us worked hard enough this year.  None of us gave enough time.  None of us knocked on enough doors or made enough phone calls.  None of us gave enough money to our candidates or to the RPDC.  A majority of American voters did not have a single contact with a McCain volunteer or campaign ad.  And you wonder why the Obama campaign was able to convince America that he was the Republican?

So if you want the birthplace of the Republican Party to again become a red state, and I know that you do, then you have to pledge yourself to our cause.  Think about every dollar that you spend as an investment, because you’ll get it all back when we lower taxes.  Think about every hour that you volunteer as an investment into a future where you won’t have to worry about whether the paramedics will actually show up if you have to call 911.

The seeds for future success will be planted now.  Call us (288-0059) and e-mail us (hq@danegop.org , facts@danegop.org).  Tell us what you are going to do to bring about victory.  And bring your friends into the party.  71,829 people voted for John McCain in Dane County.  90,369 voted for George W. Bush in 2004.  You know some of these people.  Tell them to join us in taking this county back.

And we all have to get on board with the most important Dane County political campaign before 2010: The Dane County Executive race.  Nancy Mistele is a wonderful candidate, and Kathleen Falk is an atrocious candidate who is hated by many even in her own party.  But the only way that Nancy can win is if we raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and volunteer hours and hours of our time.  And she will, because we will, because we are all sick of living in 40 square miles surrounded by sanity.

I am hopeful because of what I saw at the Election Night Party at City Center West.  Unlike the deceitful smears written by certain local reporters, I saw an incredibly positive group of people.  We aren’t the Democrats.  We aren’t suddenly going to hate our troops, or undermine our own country just because our guy isn’t the President.  We aren’t full of hate.  We’re full of hope.  And we’re full of faith that the future will be brighter because of what we will do for it.

Thank you all for reading this, and I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season with your family.
