Regional Transit Authority

Backdoor Politics

Even though a special Legislative committee on establishing  Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) for various Wisconsin areas had been at work for months, in February 2009 Governor Doyle decided to include an RTA and commuter rail proposal for Dane County in his budget - a most unusual and highly controversial power grab from the legislative bodies. Likely reasons: Little debate, discussion of policies can take place in a budget bill- no pesky taxpayers asking questions and slowing down this "railroading tactic"!

How many railroad crossings?

RR CrossingsImagine adding 8,000 railroad crossings of 60 roads between Middleton (West) and the Town of  Burke (East) terminal each day between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.! More pollution or less? Safer, free flowing traffic or gridlocked jams at the 60 railroad street crossings?

What can I do?

E-mail or call your legislator and the Governor today and copy it to the Federal Transit Administration  (FTA) -the purse string holders.  All addresses can be found at the non partisan  www.thegreattrainrobbery.org. This non partisan site is dedicated to one action: Stop! The Great Train robbery. The site provides information on how to actually address the problem - traffic congestion and better mobility - both of which would be made much worse by adding 9 Diesel powered locomotives running 17 hours a day.
