When the Rev. Gus Booth found out the IRS was dropping its inquiry into Warroad Community Church where he preaches, he was actually disappointed. “We wanted to go to court,” Booth told The Daily Signal in a phone interview. “This is the First Amendment vs. the IRS code. One standard of the law would win.”

The IRS has almost never fully enforced the Johnson Amendment, which the new Republican Party platform calls for getting rid of. The language of the platform is:

Places of worship for the first time in our history have reason to fear the loss of tax-exempt status merely for espousing and practicing traditional religious beliefs that have been held across the world for thousands of years, and for almost four centuries in America. We value the right of America’s religious leaders to preach, and Americans to speak freely, according to their faith. Republicans believe the federal government, specifically the IRS, is constitutionally prohibited from policing or censoring speech based on religious convictions or beliefs, and therefore we urge the repeal of the Johnson Amendment.

Republican nominee Donald Trump echoed the platform’s policy position in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, saying, “An amendment, pushed by Lyndon Johnson, many years ago, threatens religious institutions with a loss of their tax-exempt status if they openly advocate their political views.” READ the REST HERE.

When reading the Declaration of Independence, it is easy to focus only on the sweeping language of the second paragraph and skip over the names and mutual pledge of the signers at its conclusion.

Though the principles enunciated in its opening paragraphs, such as the self-evident truth that all men are created equal, provide the moral and philosophical foundation on which the American regime rests, it is important to acknowledge that declaring principles alone secures nothing.
Principles need to be enforced by individuals who have the habits of character necessary to fight for them, and perhaps even die for them, if need be. In a time where talk of rights dominates our political discourse, a focus on duties is indispensable in order to teach citizens the responsibilities they owe toward each other and their posterity.

The signers’ mutual pledge to themselves to sacrifice their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor for the cause of independence shows that these men took seriously their duties to the people of the new nation. A look at the historical record will show this to be beyond dispute.

Of the 56 men who signed the declaration, 12 fought in battles as members of state militias, five were captured and imprisoned during the Revolutionary War, 17 lost property as a result of British raids, and five lost their fortunes in helping fund the Continental Army and state militias battle the redcoats.
Below we will explore the sacrifices the signers made on behalf of the American cause.

Thomas Heyward Jr., Edward Rutledge, and Arthur Middleton
Thomas Heyward Jr. of South Carolina was a signer of both the declaration and the Articles of Confederation. Heyward drew the ire of the British when, as a circuit court judge, he presided over the trial of several loyalists who were found guilty of treason. The prisoners were summarily executed in full view of British troops. In 1779, he joined the South Carolina militia as a captain of artillery.  READ it HERE.

Beyond the 2nd Amendment: Dems have a problem with the whole Bill of Rights

This week, amidst heated battles in Congress, I read an article in the Washington Examiner. I wanted to share it with you because I believe it explains why the Democrats’ approach to gun control is misguided following the horrible attack in Orlando. Their proposed “solution” focuses on guns, not the root of recent attacks - radical Islamic terrorism. By making this about gun control, Democrats are proving once again how little they care about our national security.
In the Orlando attack, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) failed by not following up in its investigation of the shooter and by ignoring signs that he was planning the attack. The FBI should be held accountable and its watch list reformed.
Americans who have never committed or been convicted of a crime can be placed on the FBI terror watch list for little to no reason at all. The list is secret, giving the government immense power to strip constitutional rights from innocent Americans with no legal process. Secret government lists should never be used to violate basic rights.
No one believes terrorists should legally have guns or be able to buy guns – that’s a ridiculous political accusation by Democrats who are weak on terrorism. However, Republicans do believe the terror watch list should be reformed, so it’s better at monitoring actual terrorists instead of law-abiding Americans.
